課程概述 Course Description
This course aims to familiarize students with the way consecutive interpretation is conducted. Basic interpreting skills including active listening, summarizing, anticipation of message, categorization, note-taking, public speaking, etc. will be trained, leading to the ability to interpret with notes between English and Chinese a 3-minute message on a general topic. Topics for interpretation will range from general ones in the beginning to more technical ones, with gradual emphasis on Economics, Politics, Information, Ecology and Science.
In the beginning, students will have more practice in interpreting into Chinese and gradually ease into English.
課程目標 Course Objectives
(1) Students will have a general knowledge of subjects covering Politics, Economics, Ecology, Information and Science with their terminologies, and be able to talk fluently about any topics from them in English and Chinese.
(2) By the end of the semester, students will be able to note down and interpret with relative accuracy and fluency between English and Chinese a 3-minute message on a general topic.
課程要求 Requirements
1. Listen to CNN or BBC news and talk about at least one item of news in English each week for your classmates to interpret.
2. Be ready to give a presentation in English (individually or in a group of 2) on an assigned topic each semester. This should be a real talk/discussion rather than reading from the text so that your fellow classmates can interpret from.
3. Students should brush up on their own their ability in listening comprehension. They must also broaden their knowledge base by all means.
4. Since this course is basically a practice class, punctuality and attendance is essential. Absences (excused or unexcused) over 1/5 of the total class hours will result in failure in the course.
5. For two hours of learning, students should spend 3 hours practicing on their own or in their self-formed “study group”. Recordings of their practice should be handed in twice a semester as part of their home assignment.
6. Keep a journal of your learning each week. It will be collected twice during the semester.
